Synopsis

"Keppyo" refers to the freezing of water surfaces like oceans, lakes, and rivers. In Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo, full freezing typically occurs in February. However, due to factors like global warming, it doesn’t happen annually and is considered a rare event. Professor Takao Kameda predicts that Lake Mashu may fully freeze in 2023, based on weather data from the nearby Kawayu station. If it happens, it will be the first time in two years that the lake has completely frozen.
